Missing a tooth can affect more than just your smile. It can make chewing uncomfortable, change the way you speak, and affect your confidence. Over time, losing a tooth may also contribute to changes in the surrounding teeth and jawbone.

Fortunately, modern dentistry offers several options for replacing missing teeth, and dental implants are one of the most reliable and natural-looking solutions available. Whether you are missing one tooth, several teeth, or are considering replacing traditional dentures, dental implants may be an option worth exploring.

At Central Dental Care in Chino, CA, we believe patients should understand their treatment options before making an important decision about their oral health. In this guide, we will explain what dental implants are, who may benefit from them, how the procedure works, and what you can expect throughout treatment.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small post, typically made of titanium, that is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once the implant has healed and integrated with the surrounding bone, it can support a custom dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture.

A complete dental implant restoration generally consists of three components:

1. Implant Post

The implant post is placed into the jawbone and serves as an artificial tooth root. Titanium is commonly used because it is biocompatible and can bond with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration.

2. Abutment

The abutment connects the implant post to the final restoration. It serves as the foundation that supports the replacement tooth.

3. Dental Crown

For a single missing tooth, a custom dental crown is attached to the implant to recreate the appearance and function of a natural tooth.

Together, these components create a replacement tooth designed to look, feel, and function much like a natural tooth.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants can be an excellent option for many adults who are missing one or more teeth. However, not everyone is automatically a candidate.

Several factors influence whether dental implants are appropriate for you.

1. You Have One or More Missing Teeth

Whether you lost a tooth due to decay, gum disease, injury, or an extraction, an implant may provide a permanent replacement option without relying on neighboring natural teeth for support.

2. You Have Healthy Gums

Healthy gum tissue is important for the long-term success of dental implants. Active periodontal disease should generally be treated before implant placement.

3. You Have Adequate Jawbone Support

Dental implants need sufficient bone volume and quality to provide stability. If you have experienced bone loss following tooth extraction or prolonged tooth loss, a bone graft may be recommended before or during implant treatment.

4. You Are in Good General Health

Certain medical conditions, medications, smoking habits, and healing concerns may affect implant treatment. Your dentist will review your medical and dental history to determine whether implants are appropriate and whether any additional precautions are needed.

5. You Are Committed to Good Oral Hygiene

Although dental implants cannot develop cavities, the surrounding gum tissue can still become infected or inflamed. Daily brushing, flossing, and regular professional dental care are essential for maintaining your implant. The best way to determine whether you are a candidate is through a comprehensive dental examination and appropriate imaging.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer several advantages compared with traditional tooth replacement options.

Preserve Healthy Neighboring Teeth

Unlike a traditional dental bridge, a single dental implant does not require reshaping the neighboring natural teeth for support.

Help Maintain Jawbone Structure

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding jawbone may gradually shrink because it no longer receives stimulation from the tooth root. Dental implants transfer functional forces to the surrounding bone and can help reduce this bone loss.

Restore Chewing Function

Implants provide a stable foundation for replacement teeth, allowing many patients to enjoy a wider variety of foods comfortably.

Natural Appearance

Implant-supported crowns are custom-designed to blend with your natural teeth in shape, size, and color.

Long-Term Tooth Replacement

With proper placement, maintenance, and oral hygiene, dental implants can last many years. The implant post may last decades, although the crown or other restoration attached to it may eventually need repair or replacement.

What Is the Dental Implant Procedure Like?

One of the most common questions patients ask is, "What actually happens when I get a dental implant?"

The treatment process typically involves several stages. Every patient is different, so your timeline will depend on your oral health, bone condition, and treatment needs.

Step 1: Consultation and Treatment Planning

Your dentist will evaluate your teeth, gums, bite, and overall oral health. Dental X-rays and, when appropriate, 3D cone beam imaging (CBCT) may be used to assess bone volume and identify important anatomical structures. This evaluation helps determine the ideal implant position and whether additional procedures, such as bone grafting, are necessary.

Step 2: Implant Placement

The implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone under appropriate local anesthesia. The procedure is generally well tolerated, and many patients report that the experience is more comfortable than they initially expected. Depending on the case, the implant may be covered during healing or fitted with a temporary restoration.

Step 3: Healing and Bone Integration

After placement, the implant needs time to integrate with the surrounding jawbone. This process is called osseointegration. Healing commonly takes several months, although the timeline varies depending on the patient's bone quality, implant location, and whether bone grafting was performed.

Step 4: Abutment and Final Restoration

Once the implant has healed sufficiently, the abutment and final restoration can be placed. For a single missing tooth, this usually involves a custom-made crown designed to match the surrounding teeth. Your dentist will check the bite, fit, and appearance to ensure the restoration functions comfortably.

How Long Does Dental Implant Treatment Take?

Dental implant treatment is not always a one-day procedure. In straightforward cases, treatment may take several months from implant placement to final crown delivery. Cases involving bone grafting, sinus augmentation, or other additional procedures may require more healing time.

Some carefully selected patients may qualify for immediate temporary teeth or immediate implant restoration, but this depends on several clinical factors, including implant stability and bite conditions. It is important to remember that a predictable, healthy result is more important than rushing the process.

Dental Implants vs. Dental Bridges vs. Dentures: Which Is Better?

Treatment	Advantages	Considerations
Dental Implant	Replaces the tooth root, helps preserve jawbone, and does not require support from neighboring teeth	Requires surgery, adequate bone support, and healing time
Dental Bridge	Fixed replacement that can restore chewing function without implant surgery	Usually requires reshaping neighboring teeth
Removable Denture	Can replace multiple missing teeth and may be more affordable initially	May move during eating or speaking and requires removal for cleaning

If you are missing teeth, you may have several treatment options. Each has its own advantages, limitations, and costs. There is no single solution that is right for everyone. Your dentist can help you compare the options based on your oral health, budget, lifestyle, and long-term goals.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

The cost of dental implants varies depending on the complexity of treatment and the materials and procedures involved.

Factors that can influence the total cost include:

The number of implants needed.
Whether bone grafting is required.
Whether a sinus lift or other additional procedure is necessary.
The type of implant-supported restoration.
The complexity of the surgical and restorative treatment.
Whether temporary teeth or additional restorations are needed.

It is important to understand what is included in an implant treatment estimate. Some quotes cover only the surgical implant placement, while others include the implant post, abutment, and final crown. When comparing treatment plans, make sure you are comparing the same components and services.

At Central Dental Care, we believe patients should have a clear understanding of their recommended treatment, the steps involved, and the associated fees before committing to care.

How Do You Take Care of Dental Implants?

Although dental implants cannot develop cavities, they still require regular maintenance. The tissue surrounding an implant can develop inflammation and infection, a condition known as peri-implant disease. Without treatment, this can lead to bone loss and potentially implant failure.

To protect your investment:

Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Clean between your teeth and around your implants every day.
Use floss or other cleaning aids recommended by your dentist.
Keep up with regular dental examinations and professional cleanings.
Avoid smoking, which can increase the risk of implant complications.
Address teeth grinding and excessive biting forces when necessary.

Think of your dental implant as an investment in your long-term oral health. Proper maintenance is essential to keeping it healthy.

Are Dental Implants Worth It?

For many patients, dental implants are worth considering because they offer a stable, functional, and natural-looking way to replace missing teeth. They can help restore chewing ability, improve confidence, and reduce the need to rely on neighboring teeth for support.

However, implants are not always the best option for every patient. Factors such as bone health, medical history, treatment costs, and personal preferences should all be considered. The goal is not simply to replace a missing tooth. It is to find a treatment that supports your long-term oral health and fits your individual needs.
